I picked this book up on a recent visit to Forbidden Planet, it just beautiful and a must for any illustration lover’s bookshelf. Called ‘The Daily Zoo, keeping the doctor at bay with a drawing a day, volume 1′, it is a collection of illustrations from the sketchbook of Chris Ayers.
Synopsis – In the spring of 2005 Chris Ayers was busy working as a concept artist in the Hollywood film industry. That came to a crashing halt when he was diagnosed with leukemia on April first. On the one-year anniversary of his diagnosis, after a long period of treatment and recovery, Chris started a sketchbook called ‘The Daily Zoo’. Over the next 365 days he would tap into his lifelong fascination with the animal kingdom and draw one animal each day, challenging both his self-discipline and imagination. Most importantly, however, it would allow him the focused opportunity to celebrate the gift of each healthy day.
Chris uses pencils, inks, markers and Photoshop/Illustrator to bring to life a mix of detailed portraits and playful character concepts, all displaying an amazing talent. Alongside the amazing images, Chris journals his recovery and gives some insight into how his battle has inspired him. As he writes in the first few pages “Find – make! – time in your life to do what you love and feed your soul… A blank page should not be a frightening thing.”
The Daily Zoo is available from amazon - http://tinyurl.com/dcc9on with Volume 2 released November 2009

Billboard advertising The Zimbabwean in Johannesberg
TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris has created this unusual outdoor campaign for The Zimbabwean, a newspaper produced by a group of exiled Zimbabwean journalists. The Zimbabwean is sold in the UK, South Africa and Zimbabwe but when entering the latter is charged an import duty of 55 per cent, making it unaffordable to the average Zimbabwean. To raise awareness of this, and to encourage more sales of the paper in South Africa, wall murals, billboards and flyers have been created in Johannesburg using the Z$100 trillion dollar note, a symbol of the country’s world record inflation. Worth less than paper, The Zimbabwean has turned the money into its advertising, hoping to raise awareness of the dire situation in the country under the Mugabe regime.
